Guan Yin Dependency

Description

*Note: With no first-hand knowledge of Chinese, I can't be certain that the symbol on this flag is actually the one for 'Guan Yin'. If someone who knows sees this, I would be grateful for a correction.

The Flag:
Derived directly from the flag of its parent state, the Martian Free State discotechnology.deviantart.com… , the black as with the martian flag, represents the depths of space and the red the blood and spirit of the Martian People.  The symbol in the middle is that of Guan Yin, after whom the habitable planet is named and who is considered the patron bodhisattva of the Gliese 832 system in Red Path Buddhism.  To the left, the lotus symbol of Guan Yin and the three eyes of Erlang Shen give mythological references to the namesakes of the two primary inhabited worlds, Guan Yin and the moons of Erlang Shen.

Society: Shi Ren
-Orientation: Conservative, Collectivist, Extrovert
-Ethos: Chinese peasantry, circa-the Long March
-Patron Philosophers: Sun Yat-Sen, Lao-Tzu, Guan Daosheng
-Culture Hero: The Extraordinary Worker, who's productivity benefits the whole
-Ethnicity: Martian, Chinese dominant, with distinct regional enclaves of others.

Society: Prejau "Water People"
-Orientation: Conservative, Collectivist, Introvert
-Ethos: Prospectors gone native, insular miners
-Patron Philosophers: Zheng He, William Henry Smyth, Karl August Wittfogel
-Culture Hero: The Good Steward, who makes wise use of the treasure they found
-Ethnicity: Belter, Korean/Brazilian, with other influences not uncommon

Government: The Gliese 832 Dependent State ("Guan Yin Dependency")
-Area: All settlements within the Gliese 832 Solar System en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_8…
-Capital: Cai Shen, on Kui Xing, third Moon of Erlang Shen en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_8…
-Form: Loose alliance of the Guan Yin Free State and the Soryzdani Erlang Shen, under rule of the Martian Free State, with military officials appointed
-Head of State: Resident Commissioner, an appointed governor from Mars, in the Home System.
-Official Language: Mandarin Chinese, Lojban

Government: Guan Yin Free State
-Area: All settlements within the gravity well of Guan Yin, including those on the moons of Nezha and Chang'e
-Capital: Sun Wukong City, Guan Yin
-Form: Meritocracy.  Structured in principle much like Martian military state, without centuries of warfare, suffrage in the GYFS is extended to any who've done 'good service' to the state, usually in the form of a year or two of volunteer labor.  This wider availability of citizenship, combined with a less centralized, more localized government, has prevented Guan Yin from developing a Martian-style de facto aristocracy.
-Head of State: Citizen-Governor
-Official Language: Mandarin Chinese

Government: Soryzdani Erlang Shen
-Area: All settlements within the gravity well of Erlang Shen and its moons, excepting the fleet bases of the Grand Army of Mars.
-Capital: Tcazi'e on Kui Xing, third moon of Erlang Shen
-Form: A loose collection of clans and settlements who have agreed to abide by agreements negotiated in their name in order to give them better bargaining position versus the Martians.
-Head of State: Negotiator-General, selected from the various clan heads from their own, can be removed or re-elected at any time.
-Official Language: Lojban

Description:
The primary outpost of Martian civilization outside the Home System, the Gliese 832 system was one of the second wave of interstellar settlement.  Although ostensibly still Martian, Gliese 832 has developed its own traditions of rugged independence and distinct cultures.  Unusually for the Near Colonies, the colonies of Gliese 832 have retained close ties to the Home System culture that spawned them.

Due to its close ties with Mars, and its location in the hotly-contested Near Colonies, Gliese 832 has been deeply involved in the Kakubjaya, both as a source for troops for the Grand Army of Mars, leading to many double citizenships in the GYFS and the MFS, but also as a battlefield as Pact forces try to strike at Mars' primary extrasolar holdings.  The Guan Yin Irregulars especially form an important part of the Grand Army's efforts in the extrasolar theaters and are often colloquially known as the "14th Star Army".

Guan Yin is a terrestrial planet, the second out from Gliese 832 and started out slightly more habitable than the original state of Mars in the Home System.  It was settled primarily by Martians, largely of the working and Resident classes, and over the centuries the cooperative nature of Guan Yin society has owed much to both the collective nature of Martian society and the necessity of working together to move forward the ongoing work of terraforming Guan Yin to where it is today, mostly habitable but with toxic native atmosphere remaining in the deepest valleys.  Tough, resilient, hard-working and stoic, the native Shi Ren generally group into regional villages and townships organized around large extended families, which form the basis of their society.  They have a general predisposition towards local rather than central control.

Erlang Shen (Gliese 832 b) is a gas giant approximately half the mass of Jupiter back in the Home System, which makes it far and away the most massive planet of Gliese 832.  It has numerous useful (if not immediately habitable) moons, including Kui Xing "The barracks moon", which retains a thin atmosphere, the ice moon of Matsu and the mining moon of Hou Yi.  These moons were settled primarily by Belters, placed there by their Martian overlords to provide materials for the terraforming of Guan Yin, but over the centuries their important spot sitting on top of the raw materials, the Belter 'Clans' (more like corporations, often unconnected by locations) called the "Watermen" from their access to the ice moon of Matsu, were able to use their resources to negotiate as equals with the more numerous Shi Ren.  For centuries the two peoples existed in symbiosis, each trading the other for what they each needed.  Unlike the Shi Ren, the Prejau allied with the Spacelords when they came, although like the Shi Ren, they unified with the Martians during the Reclamation.
